PHNOM PENH —
The UN-backed Khmer Rouge tribunal will hold an initial hearing for two aging regime leaders July 30, in anticipation of the beginning of a full trial at the end of the year.
Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan are undergoing an atrocity crimes trial in two phases, the first of which was completed early this year and focused mainly on the forced evacuation of Phnom Penh.
The second phase is broader in scope and will examine Khmer Rouge detention centers and work collectives and the roles of Nuon Chea, the regime’s chief ideologue, and Khieu Samphan, its nominal head of state, across a range of alleged atrocities, including genocide.
The July hearing will focus on victim repatriation, a review of potential witnesses and other legal matters, a tribunal spokesman told VOA Khmer Friday.
