PHNOM PENH —
Aging Khmer Rouge leader Khieu Samphan was sent to the hospital earlier this week, but officials at the UN-backed tribunal, where he is facing atrocity crimes charges, say he is in good condition.
Khieu Samphan, 82, who is on trial alongside a second Khmer Rouge leader, Nuon Chea, was sent to the hospital five days ago for treatment of gripe, court officials said.
“He is better now, but we don’t know when he can leave the hospital,” tribunal spokesman Neth Pheaktra said.
Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan are the only two former regime leaders currently on trial, for crimes including genocide.
Court observers and Khmer Rouge victims have routinely expressed concerns that the slow process of the tribunal could mean the accused will not fully face the court.
