Prime Minister Hun Sen met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on the sideline of an Asean summit in Myanmar this week, where they briefly discussed the Khmer Rouge tribunal.
The UN-backed court has successfully tried only one suspect, while two more are all that remain in detention.
Donors have proven reluctant to continue to fund the tribunal, which has struggled with financing in recent years, even as it moves toward completion of the trial of Nuon Chea and Khieu Samphan, the court’s most important case to date.
“The Secretary-General thanked the prime minister for the government’s payment of the salaries of the national staff working for the [tribunal] and asked for the continued support for the [tribunal] in 2015, including regarding the salary payments,” Eri Kaneko, a UN spokeswoman told VOA Khmer.
