Hun Sen Meets Turkey’s Erdogan, Signs Accords

Cambodia and Turkey agreed to increase bilateral trade to $1 billion.

Prime Minister Hun Sen has met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Istanbul to boost bilateral ties.

The three-day visit to Turkey, which began on Sunday, involved meetings with several senior government officials and the signing of eight agreements covering trade and investor protections, tourism, agriculture, water and mine clearance.

The two countries agreed to increase bilateral trade to $1 billion.

“With the direction of promoting trades up to $1 billion in the future, His Excellency Mr. President and Samdech Techo Hun Sen of the Kingdom of Cambodia has agreed to promote businesses of the two countries to mutually cooperate in investing on prioritized sectors of Cambodia in the future, especially the plans for Cambodia infrastructure,” according to an official statement.

It added that Cambodia would upgrade its consulate in Turkey to an embassy.

Students who met with Prime Minister Hun Sen in Istanbul welcomed the agreements.

Tam Sakirin, a computer engineering student at Ankara University, said the deals were “good news”.

“So if we have an embassy here, it would help facilitate very much what the students need,” he said.

Totsinin Sary, a pharmacy student at Ankara University, said she was pleased that the government was paying attention to Cambodians living overseas.

“For me I am delighted because we come here and we are glad that we receive attention from the leaders, that he supports us from the top,” she said.
