Battambang provincial court will proceed with hearings later this month for four doctors charged with illegally operating clinics, but the doctors have been released for now, officials said Friday.
The four doctors—two Cambodian and two Chinese—were arrested and questioned last month, after a crackdown on illegal clinics prompted by an HIV outbreak in the province that was linked to the repeated use of dirty needles by an unlicensed doctor there.
Hearings will be held June 18, Chet Vanny, deputy Battambang provincial police chief, told VOA Khmer. The four have not been detained, he said.
The court has requested translators to go over certification for the Chinese doctors, to see whether they are legitimate, he added.
Noun San, Battambang’s provincial prosecutor, said that the court set the trial date for the four doctors after they were questioned Thursday, but he declined to comment on the session.
He also declined to comment on the translation of the doctors’ certificates.
The Cambodian doctors are Keo Sovann Sokyan, 63, and Vanthar Sieng Heng, 32. They ran a clinic called The Branch Association of Kind Cambodian Doctors.
The Chinese doctors are Ma Phy, 48, who ran a clinic called China-Korea 24 Hour, and Quo Liuana, 52, who ran the Khmer-China Friendship Clinic.
