PHNOM PENH - Chinese technicians are investigating a hydrodam accident in Pursat province that injured four workers and has left three still missing.

The $255 million Atay River Dam, in Veal Veng district, is under construction by the China Datang Corporation. On Saturday, structures inside the dam burst, flooding the area, emptying the reservoir and delaying power generation that was supposed to begin next year.

“As far as I know, the investigation is in progress,” Chinese Embassy spokesman Yang Tian Yue told VOA Khmer on Thursday.

There has been no conclusion on what caused the accident, and authorities say they are not ready to declare the missing workers dead.

And although local officials in the province say the company has begun discussions with family members for compensation, neither Yang nor Pursat Governor Khoy Sokha could confirm this.
