Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong met Vietnamese leaders on Monday, during a trip to strengthen ties between Canberra and countries in Southeast Asia.

Wong separately spoke with Vietnamese President Nguyen Xuan Phuc and Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh to discuss bilateral relations between the two nations.

Earlier in the day, Wong held a meeting with her counterpart Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son as she started the visit to Vietnam.

It is Wong's second trip to the Southeast Asian region since she was appointed to the post one month ago.

Wong is scheduled to depart Hanoi to continue her trip to Malaysia, the country where she was born, on Tuesday.
