New York City is crisscrossed with underground natural gas pipelines -- most of them dozens of years old -- that supply cooking and heating gas to millions of residents and businesses. Most residents have long thought of natural gas as safe and environmentally sound. But safety concerns about a new high-pressure pipeline now under construction have sent some New Yorkers out into the streets to protest.
