Police are urging people to stay away from the area around the cathedral, which was sealed off after the incident.
Police union official Cedric Michel said the attack occurred as an officer was patrolling on the esplanade in front of the cathedral.
A police spokesman said authorities are not certain if the assailant, who has been hospitalized, acted alone.
