PHNOM PENH —
Phnom Penh city officials will not allow a rally for World Habitat Day, when victims of land disputes and forced evictions from across the country had planned a march.
About 1,200 people were expected to march next week, starting from the neighborhood of Dei Krahorm, where more than 1,700 families were evicted in 2009.
The decision was made following a meeting Wednesday morning between city officials and community organizers.
Forced evictions and land disputes have become a major source of unrest, with a growing number of disenfranchised Cambodians demonstrating.
