Live Blog: Cambodia's Opposition Returns

Despite efforts by Cambodian government of Prime Minister Hun Sen to block their return to the country, leaders of the Cambodia National Rescue Party have vowed to return home on Saturday, Nov 9 -- the country's independence day.

According to French Senator André Gattolin's tweet, nineteen French parliamentarians released a statement with their signatures, calling on French government and European member states to support the return plan of Sam Rainsy, the self-exiled leader of Cambodia National Rescue Party, to Cambodia.

"French parliamentarians ... declare our full and active support with the non-violent step taken by Mr. Sam Rainsy; call on France and the European Union member states to ensure the full security and give support to the leaders of Cambodia National Rescue Party," according to a media blog by Senator André Gattolin, on Nov. 6.

U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo Urged by House Members to Act for Cambodians

Five U.S. Congressmen want Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to urge the Cambodian government to “uphold Cambodia’s constructional commitment to principles of liberal multi-party democracy.”

In a letter sent Friday to the top American diplomat, the signatories expressed concern about the “unrest and violence that may ensue given Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Sen’s repeated threats” against the exiled leaders of the Cambodia National Rescue Party (CNRP) who have announced their intention of returning to Cambodia on November 9.

“We are also deeply troubled by the politically-motivated arrests and detention of CNRP activists and supporters since August 16, when CNRP exiled leaders announced their plan to return to Cambodia,” the letter said.
